Chemotherapy
ChemotherapyWhen surgery is not an option, chemotherapy is often looked to as a treatment option for mesothelioma.

Chemotherapy will not offer patients a cure for mesothelioma, but has been shown to be effective in alleviating many of the terrible symptoms of mesothelioma. Scientists and other experts are constantly exploring the efficacy of new chemotherapy medications and victims of mesothelioma will continue to benefit from these ever-expanding efforts.

Chemotherapy is an extremely painful and debilitating experience. In the case of mesothelioma, powerful chemotherapy drugs are intravenously administered to the victim. Different chemotherapy drugs or combinations of drugs may be used on a patient to patient basis.

The only FDA approved chemotherapy medication for the treatment of malignant pleural mesothelioma is Alimta® and is often used in conjunction with the alkylating agent Cisplatin®. The combination of these two chemotherapy drugs is the mostly widely used chemotherapy treatment for those suffering from mesothelioma.

Most patients will experience tremendously painful and incapacitating side effects from chemotherapy and physicians may adjust dosages depending on the effects experienced by the patient.
