What is Asbestosis?

AsbestosisAsbestosis is the name given to a life-threatening breathing disorder that is caused by the inhalation of asbestos fibers. The inhalation of these fibers and the accumulation of these dangerous fibers in the lungs can cause permanent scarring of lung tissue and diminished breathing capacity. The warning signs and symptoms of asbestosis often do not appear for several years after initial exposure to asbestos; however, after signs symptoms become evident the affected person’s condition can quickly deteriorate and often lead to disability and even death.

Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral that was commonly used the past in thousands of products due to its ability to resist heat and corrosion.

In the mid-70’s the United States government began to regulate the use of asbestos after it was discovered to cause potentially fatal asbestosis and a rare type of cancer called mesothelioma. Most people who have acquired asbestosis were exposed to asbestos over an extended period of time in a variety of different asbestos related occupations. Fortunately most people who were exposed to asbestos never develop asbestosis and the risk of asbestosis lessens with each day that a person is not exposed to asbestos.

Experts estimate that as many as 10 million people have been exposed to asbestos since the 1940’s. Today most asbestos exposure occurs from the removal old asbestos product that were installed before the government began strict regulation of asbestos.

Symptoms of Asbestosis

Symptoms of asbestosis typically do not become apparent for 20 to 30 years following original to asbestos. Symptoms of asbestosis develop when the scarring of lung tissue caused by the accumulation of asbestos fibers no longer allows the lungs to expand and contract normally.
